Για όσους έχουν λατρέψει το "Dead Poets Society" (ρίξτε μια ματιά, η ταινία σκίζει! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ppqb0t_B0KY ) όπως εγώ, η φράση "carpe diem" είναι ήδη γνωστή.
Carpe Diem λοιπόν,είναι μια φράση ενός λατινικού ποιήματος του Horace, το "Ωδές", ή στα Λατινικά "Carmina". Σημαίνει "άδραξε τη μέρα". Ολόκληρη η φράση είναι "carpe diem quam minimum credula postero", δηλαδή "άδραξε τη μέρα και μην εμπειστεύεσαι το μέλλον". Το ποίημα του Thoreau πιο πάνω εκφράζει τέλεια το νόημα της φράσης αυτή. Πρέπει να ζούμε συναρπαστικά, να ρουφήξουμε το μεδούλι της ζωής, κι όχι να πεθάνουμε για να ανακαλύψουμε πως δε ζήσαμε. Όλοι μας θα πεθάνουμε μια μέρα, δεν έχει νόημα να το σκεφτόμαστε. Αυτό που έχει νόημα είναι να περνάμε όσο καλύτερα γίνεται σήμερα. Για αυτό:
